Trauma is a psychological response to a deeply distressing or disturbing event that overwhelms an individual’s ability to cope, causing feelings of helplessness, diminished sense of self, and emotional numbness. Trauma can have long-lasting adverse effects on a person’s mental, emotional, and physical well-being.

Three Examples of Trauma include:

1. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD): This disorder can develop after an individual experiences or witnesses a traumatic event. Symptoms include flashbacks, nightmares, severe anxiety, and uncontrollable thoughts about the event.

2. Acute Stress Disorder (ASD): Occurring in the immediate aftermath of a traumatic event, ASD includes symptoms similar to PTSD, such as intrusive memories, dissociation, and hyper-arousal. These symptoms typically last from three days to one month following the trauma.

3. Complex Trauma: This results from exposure to multiple, chronic, and prolonged traumatic events, often of an interpersonal nature, such as ongoing abuse or domestic violence. Symptoms include emotional dysregulation, relationship difficulties, and negative self-perception.

Trauma can be effectively managed with therapeutic approaches like cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT).
